CHAPTER 13
Summary
Robert and Edna attend the Sunday Mass on the other island, but feeling
drowsy, Edna leaves half way through the service, closely followed by Robert.
Robert takes her to the cottage of Mme. Antoinne where Edna can rest.
She takes off most of her clothing and rests on a bed while Robert waits outside in the garden. She has a good sleep and when she returns to Robert she jokes and hopes that those back on Grand Isle have
disappeared.
As sunset approaches, they return home.
Interpretation
Edna realizes that she could never be happy with Robert unless all those on
Grand Isle had disappeared. That way, the couple’s fantasy day could last forever.
